Founded in 1828, Quincy is the county seat of Gadsden County and the historic, cultural, and governmental heart of North Florida. Situated in the center of Gadsden County, Quincy has served as the hub of county commerce and civic life for nearly two centuries — anchored by its courthouse square, which has been in continuous use since 1827 as a site for both government and trade.
Quincy flourished as a prosperous agricultural center in its early decades, but the Civil War brought significant hardship, and the town’s economic fortunes temporarily waned. Recovery came through the land itself: around the turn of the 20th century, Gadsden County farmers pioneered the cultivation of “shade” tobacco — a prized, sun-sheltered variety used as the premium wrapper leaf for fine cigars. The shade tobacco industry revived Quincy’s economy and went on to define the region for nearly 80 years, making Gadsden County the Shade Tobacco Capital of the World.
But Quincy’s history holds an even more remarkable story — one rooted in vision, community trust, and the wisdom of a small-town banker. In 1907, a Coca-Cola bottling plant was established near downtown Quincy. Around that same time, Quincy State Bank President M. W. “Pat” Munroe became convinced that Coca-Cola was a sound, well-managed company with a bright future — reasoning simply that people would always want a cold drink. He actively encouraged his bank patrons to invest in the fledgling company. The decision was prescient: those investments produced scores of “Coca-Cola Millionaires” — one of the highest concentrations of Coca-Cola wealth per capita of any town in America. The legacy of that remarkable era lives on in Quincy’s gracious historic streetscapes, where many of those residents’ beautifully preserved antebellum and turn-of-the-century homes can still be admired today on a self-guided walking tour of Quincy’s 36-block nationally registered historic district.
Quincy has never stopped investing in its own future. In 1996, the city was honored with the prestigious All-American City designation. The following year, in 1997, the Florida Legislature officially designated State Road 12 — which runs directly through Quincy — as Gadsden County’s North Florida Art Trail. This scenic drive winds through the picturesque North Florida countryside, linking together the rich cultural heritage of Gadsden County’s towns, galleries, historic sites, and natural landscapes.
