LOCATION INFORMATION

For travelers seeking a true back-to-nature escape, High Bluff Campground delivers an authentic primitive camping experience on the northern shore of Lake Talquin, deep within the Lake Talquin State Forest in Gadsden County, Florida. Located just 20 miles west of Tallahassee, this rustic, tree-shaded campground offers 19 primitive campsites suitable for both tent and RV camping, with each site equipped with a picnic table and fire ring or grill — everything needed for a genuine outdoor retreat, free of electric or water hookups.

High Bluff sits at the heart of a 19,300-acre state forest spanning Gadsden, Leon, and Liberty Counties, bordered by the scenic Ochlockonee River and the sprawling waters of Lake Talquin. The diverse natural landscape — upland pines, hardwood forests, sandhills, and swamp bottomlands — makes this one of North Florida’s richest destinations for hiking, birdwatching, and wildlife photography. Campers regularly spot deer, foxes, bald eagles, and a wide variety of native bird species, with occasional sightings of black bears in the surrounding forest adding a true wilderness feel to the experience.

Anglers will find High Bluff to be an outstanding freshwater fishing destination, with direct access to Lake Talquin’s productive waters via the campground’s own fishing pier and boat ramp. The lake is well known for largemouth bass, black crappie, catfish, and redear sunfish, drawing both shore anglers and boaters throughout the year — a valid Florida fishing license is required. Beyond fishing, the campground provides direct access to canoeing, kayaking, and powerboating on Lake Talquin, along with miles of nearby trails including the Terry L. Rhodes Trail System, a 12-mile equestrian trail on the Fort Braden Tract, and a 9-mile off-road bicycle trail on the Lines Tract — all part of the Florida National Scenic Trail and Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail network.

Horse camping is permitted at High Bluff for self-sufficient equestrian campers who tie out or bring a portable corral, and leashed pets are welcome throughout the campground. With vault toilets, a quiet wooded setting, and an open-year-round booking window through Reserve America, High Bluff Campground is the perfect home base for an unplugged outdoor adventure in Gadsden County’s wild and beautiful Lake Talquin State Forest — a true Florida wilderness experience just a short drive from Tallahassee.
