Nestled along the Apalachicola River bluffs just below Jim Woodruff Dam in Chattahoochee, Florida, the Angus Gholson Nature Park is a 126-acre natural treasure in the heart of Gadsden County. Established in 2002 through a Florida Communities Trust grant, this remarkable park preserves irreplaceable old-growth forest exceeding 100 years of age.

Named in honor of beloved local botanist Angus Gholson, the park is one of North Florida’s most botanically diverse natural areas. Spring-fed streams emerge from the base of steep ravines, nourishing slope forests home to some of Florida’s rarest wildflowers. The diverse habitats — including calcareous slope forests and sweeping riverine floodplains — are more reminiscent of Appalachian mountain ecosystems than the typical pinelands of northern Florida.

Every season brings its own rewards: spring wildflowers, summer ravine coolness, fall color, and winter birding. Gadsden County’s natural heritage is on full display at the Angus Gholson Nature Park — a living laboratory of biodiversity just minutes from downtown Chattahoochee.
