LOCATION INFORMATION
Standing on the dramatic bluffs overlooking the confluence of the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers in Chattahoochee, Florida, the Apalachicola Arsenal is one of the most historically significant sites in Gadsden County — and in the entire state of Florida. The original officers’ quarters are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, bearing witness to a pivotal era in American territorial and Civil War history.
Construction of the arsenal complex began in the spring of 1834 and continued for five years, resulting in an impressive walled compound completed in 1839 that served as a vital military supply depot during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). On January 6, 1861 — before Florida formally seceded from the Union — Florida state troops seized the installation, capturing approximately 500 stands of arms, artillery, and large quantities of ammunition, marking the first military encounter of the Civil War in Florida.
The grounds later became Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, preserving the surviving officers’ quarters as a tangible, irreplaceable link to this pivotal era of American history. A visit to the Apalachicola Arsenal site is a visit to a place where the fate of Florida — and America — hung in the balance.
