LOCATION INFORMATION

The Dezell House in Greensboro, Florida is one of the most architecturally distinctive historic homes in Gadsden County — a beautifully preserved example of Prairie Style and Arts and Crafts architecture that stands in striking contrast to the more common Victorian and Colonial Revival homes of the region. Built in 1912 by James A. Dezell — the first mayor of Greensboro — and his wife Margaret, this carefully crafted residence served as the family home for 46 years.

James A. Dezell (1867-1937) came to Gadsden County from Chicago by way of southwestern Missouri in 1886, bringing with him building skills and a design sensibility shaped by the Prairie Style of the Midwest. The house’s low, spreading roofline, exterior horizontal banding, and ground-hugging appearance are classic Prairie Style elements, while the fine craftsmanship reflects the Arts and Crafts commitment to quality materials and honest construction.

In 2004, the West Gadsden Historical Society purchased the home, transforming it into the Dezell House Museum through volunteer work and state historic preservation grants. Each room is staged with antiques and exhibits, and the property is available as a venue for weddings, family reunions, and special events.
