LOCATION INFORMATION

The Gibson-Gibbs House in Quincy’s historic district tells the story of two influential Gadsden County families across more than a century of Southern history. Originally constructed by Eugene Gibson and operated by his wife as a boarding house through the Civil War era, the house was acquired in the mid-1870s by Mrs. James G. Gibbs — one of Quincy’s most prominent social leaders, an untiring worker for the Confederacy who spearheaded the effort to erect a Confederate memorial completed in 1884 on the north side of the courthouse.

After the Gibbs family moved to Charleston in 1889, the house passed to the Jones family and subsequently to Mr. and Mrs. Milton Bevis, who completed a sensitive restoration and landscape enhancement in 1987 that has helped preserve this Victorian home for future generations.

The Gibson-Gibbs House stands as a reminder of the complex, layered social history of Gadsden County — a place where remarkable stories of community leadership, wartime sacrifice, and Southern life are embedded in the very fabric of the built environment.
