THE QUINCY ACADEMY

LOCATION INFORMATION
LOCATION INFORMATION

The Quincy Academy represents one of the earliest and most enduring institutions of learning in Florida’s history, with roots stretching back to 1830 when private educational institutions were established in newly settled frontier areas of the territory. Incorporated in 1832, the Academy provided educational opportunities through its “Male Academy” and “Female Institute” — a forward-looking commitment to education for both sexes remarkable for the era.

The original Academy building burned in 1849, and the new Classic Revival building completed in 1850 served the community’s educational needs until 1912. In the subsequent decades, the building found new purpose as a temporary courthouse, library, church meetinghouse, hospital, vocational school, child-care center, and kindergarten. In 1931, the Quincy Woman’s Club Library began serving the public from the Academy’s quarters.

Today, the Quincy Academy represents nearly 200 years of educational and civic service — a tangible reminder of Gadsden County’s long-standing commitment to learning, community, and the preservation of its historical legacy.
