ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

LOCATION INFORMATION

The oldest church building in Quincy, Florida, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church stands as a living monument to the earliest era of organized religious life in Gadsden County. St. Paul’s parish was organized on December 1, 1838, and the first church structure was erected on this West King Street site in 1839 — just 11 years after Quincy itself was established. During the Civil War, the church served as one of the Confederate Army’s hospital locations.

The present structure was erected in 1892, enlarged in 1914, remodeled in 1928, and enlarged again with a cloister and parish hall in 1951. Among its most celebrated features is the Resurrection window — painted and fired rather than traditional stained glass, using a technique no longer practiced anywhere. This irreplaceable window features Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, Mother of James meeting an angel at the empty tomb, and is considered one of the most dramatic figure windows in the region.

Located at 10 West King Street in Quincy’s Historic District, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is open to visitors and continues its ministry as the oldest active congregation in Gadsden County — a profound connection to the earliest chapters of Florida’s territorial history.
