WILLIAM HARDON BUILDING

The property
LOCATION INFORMATION

The William Hardon Building on West Washington Street in Quincy is a fascinating piece of local business and technological history — a commercial property built by William Hardon to house one of Quincy’s first and most innovative industrial enterprises: an electric light plant and ice plant that brought modern amenities to this prosperous North Florida community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

William Hardon came to Quincy as a veterinarian for the Owl Commercial Company, one of the major forces in Gadsden County’s shade tobacco industry, before venturing into business for himself. The building subsequently passed through the hands of several notable Quincy figures: in 1920 it served as Jack McFarlin’s stable; in 1945, Ben Bostick purchased and renovated it for his hardware store; later, James Auman opened an office equipment company there.

The William Hardon Building’s history mirrors the layered commercial evolution of Quincy’s downtown district over more than a century — a testament to the adaptability and resilience of Gadsden County’s built heritage.
