The Harris-Munroe-Gardner House carries one of the most extraordinary ownership histories of any property in Quincy’s historic district — a chain of residents that forms a veritable who’s who of Gadsden County’s most influential families. Originally built for Isaac R. Harris, Quincy’s first mayor, the house was purchased by William Munroe in the 1850s. One of William Munroe’s 21 children was the legendary Mark W. “Pat” Munroe — six of whose children were born in this house — who inspired his neighbors to invest in Coca-Cola, helping make Quincy the wealthiest city per capita in the United States.
In 1913, William LeRoy MacGowan purchased the house to develop Gadsden County’s Fuller’s Earth industry, connecting this property to yet another chapter of the county’s remarkable economic history.
For visitors interested in Quincy’s extraordinary Coca-Cola investor story, the Harris-Munroe-Gardner House is an essential stop — a tangible connection to the family that helped transform a small Florida tobacco town into one of the wealthiest communities in the nation.
