The Henry Jefferson Davis House in Quincy’s historic district represents the prosperity and civic engagement of a family deeply woven into the fabric of Gadsden County’s business and social life for generations. Built in 1892 by Henry Jefferson Davis Jr. and his wife when they moved from the family farm in Mt. Pleasant to Quincy, the original one-story dwelling was expanded to two stories around 1906 as the family’s fortunes grew through their partnership in the A.L. Wilson Company.
The A.L. Wilson Company interest eventually passed to Henry Jefferson Davis III; the columns were added in the mid-1970s. The house subsequently served as a bed and breakfast and later as Legal Services of North Florida — a reminder of how Quincy’s historic homes have adapted to serve new community needs while preserving their architectural character.
The Henry Jefferson Davis House stands as a tangible reminder of the merchant class that built Quincy into one of the wealthiest small cities in the United States, their prosperity drawn from the shade tobacco industry that dominated Gadsden County’s economy for over a century.
