The E.B. Shelfer House at 205 North Madison Street in Quincy was built for E.B. Shelfer Sr., a prominent shade tobacco producer and businessman whose general mercantile store anchored the southeast corner of Washington and Madison Streets. The house underwent a beautiful restoration in 1993 that added artistic enhancements: a semi-octagonal extension on the back, an enhanced entrance and circular driveway on the Franklin Street side, and contemporary stained glass windows.
A Victorian garden with fountains, pool, and gazebo now surrounds the house — owned by the grand-daughter of the original builder — creating a lush, private oasis that reflects both the prosperity of the original owner and the current owners’ love of garden design and artistic expression.
The E.B. Shelfer House is one of Quincy’s most beautifully tended historic properties — a living example of how Gadsden County’s finest Victorian homes can be sensitively restored and lovingly maintained across generations, keeping the county’s extraordinary architectural heritage alive and vibrant for future visitors and residents alike.
